Ports of Call

Ijmuiden (Day 1)

Ijmuiden is a port of Amsterdam and part of the gemeente (municipality) of Velsen, western Netherlands. The port is situated at the western end of the North Sea (Noordzee) Canal, which was opened in 1876. IJmuiden is also an industrial center with fertilizer and cement factories, and it is an important fishing port with a government fish market. Three huge locks at IJmuiden link the canal to the North Sea. Two breakwaters project seaward from the canal mouth for nearly 1 mile (1.6 km). Used as a base for German torpedo boats in World War II, its facilities were damaged by Allied bombing but have since been rebuilt.

Stavanger (Day 3)

With its famous cathedral, Stavanger holds a special place in the heart of most Norwegians. For it was here that the country was first united by the Viking king Harald Harfagre. Modern day Stavanger is the major center of Norways important oil industry and although partly damaged during World War II, much of old Stavanger remains intact. A relaxing stroll along Stavangers narrow, cobblestone streets reveal brightly painted houses and colorful flowers.
Attractions & Activities
Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen (Prekestolen) in Norwegian is one of the areas most profound turist attractions. This natural rock formation with a 25 meter squared plateau stands 604 meters above the sea. Thousands of tourists visit the Rock every year. The trip takes about two hours by foot, but the rock formation can also be enjoyed from the sea by boat.

Rosendal (Day 4)

Located between Stavanger and Bergen in the mountainous Hordaland region is Hardangerfjord which, 183 km long and with a maximum depth of 830 m, is one of Norway's most beautiful fjords, noted for its spectacular scenery and majestic nature. At the entrance to Hardangerfjord, on the southern shore, is the little village of Rosendal (part of the municipality of Kvinnherad) where the Norwegian landscape is at its most characteristic: deep and narrow fjords, foaming waterfalls, and the Folgefonna, the third largest glacier in Norway.

Eidfjord (Day 5)

Eidfjord is a scenic delight. The village of Eidsdal here has served as the junction of eastern and western Norway for countless centuries. Take the thrilling bus ride along the banks of the Eie River before climbing into the stupendous Mabodal Canyon. At the very summit, you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the thundering Voringfoss Waterfall.

Haugesund (Day 6)

Haugesund is a town and municipality in the county of Rogaland, Norway. The town is the main population centre of the Haugaland and northern Rogaland area

Kristiansand (Day 7)

The largest and most important port in southeast Norway. A popular shopping area. Kristiansand, city and seaport in southern Norway, on the Skagerrak Strait. It is the seat of Vest-Agder County. Fish products, paper, pulp, and timber are shipped from here, and tourism is important. Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV, king of Denmark and Norway. The city became an Episcopal see in 1682. Population (1993 estimate) 67,113.

Oslo (Days 8, 9)

Oslo promotes itself as an outdoors city where the people are friendly and the air and water are clean. It also unashamedly bills itself as Scandinavia's top destination and proudly boasts that its summer climate 'outwarms' all its rivals from home and abroad. In fact its 'niceness' is perhaps the most lasting impression that most visitors take home with them. It's not spectacular and there are other places in Norway that are more exciting, but Oslo is free from the very things that makes staying in most capital cities tedious. It's compact but not too small, it's old but not in decay, it's expensive but there are ways around it and it's welcoming without being in your face. So if you've saved your pennies and want to see a slice of Scandinavian beauty, pack your bags, head to Oslo and enjoy... everyone does.
Attractions & Activities
For a spectacular view of the city and the fjord, visit Akershus Castle. Sitting on a cliff, this fortress was originally built in 1300. The present structure dates mainly from the 17th century and features quaint buildings and beautiful grounds.

Aalborg (Day 10)

On the banks of the Limfjord, Aalborg was originally a center for Viking trade over one thousand years ago. Today, shades of that past are evident in the city center, a pedestrian-friendly area whose wide Obels Plads - or square - welcomes visitors. Here, marvel at Jens Bangs Stenhus, built in 1624 and one of the largest Renaissance period town houses in Europe. Also in the city center, Aalborghus Castle, built in 1550 - and Budolfi Church cathedral.

Attractions & Activities

Take a culture beak at the North Jutland Art Museum with its collection of modern art. Browse the galleries and shops or listen to local music in the live-music cafés that line Jomfru Ane Street. The east coast of Denmark is famous for its beaches, and is a popular holiday spot for families. Nearby, visit the tiny market town of Nibe or cross the bridge to neighboring Nørresundby, where a museum and burial ground from the Germanic Iron Age and Viking times is located.

Aarhus (Day 11)

Gateway to Denmarks pastoral Jutland Peninsula. Not to be missed are the meticulously recreated half-timbered houses at Den Gamle By.
Attractions & Activities
A trip to Aarhus would be incomplete without a visit to Den Gamle By (The Old Town). This fascinating open-air museum features 75 restored buildings from all around Denmark dating from the 17th- and 18th centuries. Full of things to see and do, it really is a must for any visitor.

Warnemunde (Day 12)

Berlin makes an exciting days journey from Warnemunde. Freely walk through the Bandenburg Gate and wtand where "The Wall" once stood. Explore the best of both worlds: two major opera houses, two zoos and scores of world-class museums. Berlin also boasts more trees than Paris and more bridges than Venice.

Attractions & Activities

What makes the Brandenburg Gate such a must-visit landmark goes beyond its classical columns and friezes. The real intrigue lies within its stories. Over the years this historic structure has stood for many things - most recently as a symbol of peace and freedom when a divided Germany became one in 1989.

Copenhagen (Day 13)

The center of Danish commerce and government, Copenhagen is one of Europes best-loved capitals. Visit the Little Mermaid statue and enjoy Tivoli Gardens, the 150-year-old amusement park. You can see the Danish crown jewels at Rosenborg Palace.
Attractions & Activities
Take a stroll down Langelinie Promenade to see the heart of Copenhagen. It runs along the water from the port, skirting the 300-year-old, moated citadel near the celebrated statue of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid. The surrounding park is home to the Gefion Fountain, Copenhagen's most spectacular fountain.
